Queer in Cyprus? The LGBTIQ Movement, Normativity, and Resistance in a Changing (Trans)national Landscape

The literature on lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans*, intersex, and queer (LGBTIQ) politics has established the interplay between domestic transnational norms political tactics. However, knowledge about how local LGBTIQ activists understand, negotiate, employ campaigns tactics over time remains limited. This article builds dynamics national politics. Based interviews with Cypriot activists, it examines they adapt their perceptions employments of activism when movement interacts around gender sexuality, what impact this interaction is boundaries in-group exclusion inclusion. analysis interview material identifies three approaches toward that participants express time: Ambivalence toward, acclamation of, resistance I argue these different show are not static relationship “norm” “queer” both messy productive. further activists’ understandings, negotiations, in contentious contexts may reinforce and/or challenge politics’ normativization emancipatory Therefore, beyond contributing to discussions national–transnational politics, demonstrates importance studying views for gaining a well-rounded understanding issue.
